Another Gun Control Myth

Smaller firearm magazines will prevent mass shootings, say gun control supporters. Not so, according to a new video by the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA). From the accompanying article:

The startling video demonstration, conducted under the supervision of Boone County, Ind. Sheriff Ken Campbell and funded by ArmaLite, “throws cold water on anti-gunners who argue that magazine limitations are necessary to prevent mass shootings,” said CCRKBA Chairman Alan M. Gottlieb. “We are all indebted to ArmaLite for this informative effort.”

“Under Sheriff Campbell’s supervision,” he explained, “two shooters – an experienced man and a novice female – are able to repeatedly fire 30-round shot strings at three targets, using 15-, ten- and six-round magazines, all in under 30 seconds.”

The male demonstrator fired 30 rounds from a pistol, first with two 15-round magazines, in 20.64 seconds, then with three ten-rounders in 18.05 seconds and finally with five six-round magazines in 21.45 seconds. The woman fired the same magazine sequence, with two 15-round magazines in 22.9 seconds, three ten-rounders in 25.51 seconds and the final five six-round magazines in 26.93 seconds.

In addition, the man then fires 20 rounds from an AR-15 rifle using a single magazine, in 12.16 seconds. He then fired 20 rounds using two ten-round magazines in less time, 10.73 seconds!

“Imposing magazine capacity limits creates a horribly false sense of security,” Gottlieb observed. “This video puts the lie to this politically-motivated disarmament strategy.”

    Awesome demonstration. Thanks Tom

    My takeaway is:
A cool, calculating mass murderer (part of the psychopath profile) can reload with a smaller mag in no time and blaze away at full speed, whereas, a threatened, panicky victim fumbles around for the next mag, and oops, she’s down.
BTW, I’ve been mugged at gunpoint a couple of times and it’s always been a gang (yeah, I finally moved out of the U.S.). Well if it’s a gang, you’re DEFINITELY better off with a high capacity mag.

Interesting that they weren’t going to slide lock when doing mag changes. In a stressful situation, I can’t imagine everyone keeping track of shots fired.

Regardless, It doesn’t take much practice at all to be able to quickly reload

Devil’s advocate position: Oh crap, really!? We need to ban magazines over 3 rounds then!

  • Joel Poindexter

A point about the magazine restrictions I haven’t seen anyone raise so far is that — in my experience — it’s best not to load them to capacity. Filling a magazine to its capacity can wear out the spring over time, so when I was in the army I typically left space for a few rounds. Putting a limit of, say ten rounds, means that some magazines would need to be loaded with even fewer to prevent malfunctioning.

Congress is going to have to enact a bill that establishes the Department of Wizardry & Sorcery if they want to prevent anything. I mean good grief: “magazine limitations are necessary to prevent mass shootings.”

I need a magic wand too.

Using facts and logic to refute a left-progressive talking point?

Why not limit everyone to muskets. Except but the Almighty State, of course.

the problem with this type of “argument” is that all it does is open more doors for possable infringment it is like quick sand the only way to survive is to avoid geting stuck in the first place and to get OUT as quickly as possable when you do fall in what you DO NOT do is try to swim in it!

have none of you heard the parable of “brer rabbit and the tar baby”?

in this case all that these demonstrations acomplish is to create the “need” in the mind of the PTB control freaks and there sheeple to out right ban ANY interchangable or expandable mags on all simi autos intended for “civillian” use !

the new gun bill in CO actually does exactly that on pump action shotguns of all things because of “screw on mag extenders”.

of note on the “simi auto action”. the NRA did a demo a couple of years ago to show how cnn (if i rember corectly) was conflating simi auto “civiliian” copies of military slective fire weapons with the real deal . LOL and man OH man did they EVER rub there noses in it ………BUT in the prosess they showed that a simi auto is every bit as effective a weapon as the the full auto version…..result? now every news story with a swat team mentioned emphisizes the usage by “police” of simi auto AR15s………….. so next push expect the control freaks to swich from calling them “military” style assult weapons to “police style” assult weapons wich will then be spun to imply that “civillians” have no buisness with police grade hardware for there “sporting and hunting” needs with all the “law and order” (sheeple) types eating it up.

that said the focous on “mental health” this round is the scariest part of the latest push.

no one is willing to admit what the problem is (hint prussian schooling) so scape goating the mental state of the shooters is the path of least resistance , but WOW what a slipery slope that one is! “mental defect” has been used by the PTB to get rid of descent by killing off the dissenters for most of modern history !

this is yet another example of a BAD defence of the second amendment especially from those who claim the second means what it says , some are already calling that view “extreem” or out right nutz…….it aint a long stroll from there to a padded cell in the minds of the control freaks we are dealing with.
the isue is not that these people are in fact “disturbed” but WHY and HOW they were made “defictive” to begin with (hint “prussian schooling”) and WHY a disproportionate number of mass killings involve “schools” (hint “prussian schooling”) and those that don’t involve a school directly ALWAYS involve “bulliying” and or “marginalization” of the individual (chris dorner any one) ,
it is not about violent media like movies or vidio games either. but rather what changed here in the states that turned the masses of US society in to violence obsessed bullys in the first place(last hint “PRUSSIAN SCHOOLING”)

as a result of a certian system of schooling that was imposed on americans we were made in to the best “work force” on the planet with a work ethic that resulted in the highest productive output that any industrialized country has ever recorded.

and the cost? nothing much just our ability to think and reason for our selves as we were “dumbed down” but it gets worse this is an “enginered system” that predicts how many sheeple will be suitable for the factories how many will make “good soldiers” aka “cannon foder” and how many will end up so defective so as to need imprisonment.

YES all this was done “knowingly” with random violence one of many negitive but execepted side effect of a population too stupefied to govern it’s self even on a personal level BUT hay! we can “sell ‘em any thing”………

all this being the case we need to accept certain things :

1 that mass shootings will continue to occur untill “public schooling” is done away with totaly.

2 that the problem of mass violence will only get worse as long as the econimy is being repressed as it is by the ptb and this is being compounded by the abdication of the rule of law by the elites.

3 this there for is a “holding action” and we need to act accordingly by not giving the oposition ANY thing to work with. like weak defencive “excuses” like “mag size” does not matter or “type of action” does not matter and even the “criminals ignore laws” so gun laws dont matter excuse is nothing but a distraction.

We The People do not need to “excuses” for the second amendment , the right to keep and bare arms and to present an active defence of our property is all the “justification” required for it to exist. and get this straight “defence” of anything less is a distraction by the PTB with the INTENT to ensnare we the people in arguments that are UNWINABLE “tar baby” arguments that MUST be avoided totaly or quashed as quickly as possable.

this is a line in the sand isue there is no point in presenting facts or logic NO ONE on the other side of the line is going to be convinced by ANYTHING we have to say so just like with cops DONT volenteer information or it will be used against you PERIOD.

We want the lawful defender to be able to meet the unlawful aggressor at least on level ground, if not have the advantage. If anything, we should be encouraging a larger capacity of defensive power.

  • Reverend Draco

I had a 9mm years ago, and two 13-round mags. I discovered that loading them to capacity caused a jam – every time. I didn’t notice if it jammed on the same number of rounds each time (wish I would have), but I started only loading 10 rounds after that – and never had a jam again. The bonus to that was, a box of ammo contained 50 rounds, so I’d have 5 mags to play with at the range.

  • settheline

While I think it’s fairly obvious that smaller magazines will only marginally effect a mass shooter’s overall capacity, this video is a terrible measure of that. Here’s why:

    1. Sample size of two.

    2. No split time measurement to determine how much of the differences are due to someone simply pulling the trigger faster. (By hearing it seemed they shot faster with smaller mags).

    3. No real statistical analysis .

IMO, A better way to approach the issue of capacity is to do some marginal analysis. I did just that in my blog. Check it out if you like: http://thelibertysoapbox.blogspot.com/search?updated-min=2013-01-01T00:00:00-08:00&updated-max=2014-01-01T00:00:00-08:00&max-results=1
