    I admire him as a composer.  He’s explored melody, harmony, and lyrics that stray outside the pop formula for all these years — and been able to build and keep an audience in the process.

    It could be because he wears sunglasses in dark nightclubs. Or it could be because of his bright yellow smoker’s teeth. Maybe it’s because he still wears the same thin cloth ties that were the popular attire of mall workers in the 1980s. But I think it’s because he drinks Black Cows.

    Fagen and Becker grew up in the age of bebop when cool and hip were elevated to art forms.
