GPS Devices on Guns?

That’s what a Chicago alderman is calling for. Willie Cochran says stolen guns could be tracked down if they carried GPS devices. What about the privacy concerns of gun owners, who could themselves be tracked? Willie has thought of that: “Safety is…a much more important issue than is privacy.”

    Bureaucrat in lala land.
-A gun isn’t a modern gadget like a phone, there is no power source, so its not practical.

-criminals would remove or disable the GPS transmitter. Car thiefs have figured out how to disable car GPS transmitters, and that is way more complex than a firearm gps would be. Removing a big bulky transmitter attached to a purely mechanical firearm would by as easy as putting that part in the microwave for 5 seconds or unscrewing the transmitter and attaching it to a random car in a walmart parking lot.

-you could not retrofit the existing 150-300 million firearms with GPS, so why bother?

    - and if safety is more important than privacy to him, he can live openly, but he has no right to push that on others.

And if they couldn’t figure out where the transmitter is, there’s always the ‘wrap it in tin foil’ solution…

This would be worthy of a _Get Smart_ episode — think KAOS agent Siegried declaring, “Veee must alter dee terror strategy since der mayor ist trrackin our handguns!” Ya see, the thugs in gangland, the south of the border drug kingpins, and the back alley murderers are gonna be very worried about this.
My God, you just can’t make this stuff up.

“Safety is…a much more important issue than is privacy.”

Well, he has a point. Perhaps it’s time to begin publishing the home addresses of government creeps so normal people can take steps to make themselves safer from the likes of WIllie Cochran.

(This is not an admonition toward anything violent… just a nice WE’RE WATCHING YOU EAT YOUR BREAKFAST to make him rethink that statement.)

I’m sure he thinks it’s a good idea to put them all on a live map too…. you know, so you can avoid danger.

How about leaving it up to the choice of the gun owner if he or she wants a GPS tracking device in their firearm?

I would imagine most gun owners wouldn’t want this (me being one of them). But if someone loses their firearm they may want to be able to track it? But let it be the choice of the individual, not a government mandate.

Freedom of individual choice is always fair.

Of all the totalitarian attacks on gun rights being pushed, this is among the scariest. Which says a lot.
