In the Mail: James Madison and the Making of America

Just received an advance copy of Kevin Gutzman’s James Madison and the Making of America. It’s a featured selection of the History Book Club for February, an honor in itself. But the blurbs on this thing are especially impressive; endorsements of this book come from people who can boast Pulitzer Prizes, prestigious university posts, and important scholarly contributions of their own (e.g., the editor of the Papers of George Washington predicts this book will become the standard biography of Madison).

Gutzman is not a hagiographer of Madison, as so many treatments of his subject have been, but neither is he unfair to the man. I can’t wait to spend time with what promises to be an important and absorbing book. Pre-order yours now!

When F.A. Hayek had to choose an author to describe his “Whig” views, he chose Madison.  Thanks for sharing Tom!

I would pre-order, but I already have a HUGE wish list on Amazon full of books written or recommended by you and your colleagues.  And, of course, as a poor college student, I have to buy them one or two at a time, and struggle to make them last more than a couple days each.  It’s on the list, though…. and soon enough I will graduate, get a job, and purchase many, many books.

You know, I wish I had found all this before I started college and got a few years in.  I could have studied it in school and justified buying all this as “research”.

Thanks for passing this on; I’ve added it to my Amazon wish list. Madison is a fascinating figure, and I’ve been looking for an even-handed treatment of him.

That said, $14.99 for the Kindle edition? Are publishers trying to go out of their way to make us hate them—or do people actually buy e-books over hardcovers in exchange for a $2.50 discount?

Last year I bought the biography of Madison by Brookhiser. It was the most recent available at the time. Just wondering if anyone had an opinion on it?
