Is the Eight-Hour Sleep a Myth?

Some experts are saying so.

Unlearn the Propaganda!

  • http://tonyescobar.org/ Tony Escobar

“There will be sleeping enough in the grave.” – Benjamin Franklin

  • http://twitter.com/MooseOfReason Jeff

Certainly you could justify staying awake deep into the night by your productivity, Tom.

  • Daniel

Great article, but what it fails to mention is that in preindustrial ages almost all of us were peasants.  People for the most part slept at dusk out of necessity.  They were simply too tired from the day’s toil.  The ancient days of premier sommeil are over, but at least we have this wikipedia article:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Segmented_sleep

I knew I needed an expert to tell me why I need sleep or don’t need sleep especially aside from the fact my body tells me I am tired. It is funny in life the need for an expert to explain everything to me because I am really not that smart, well at least to the experts. This is where the education industry really has me shaking my head. Someday when I grow up I only want to follow my dreams and stop dealing with all the experts and the crap they lob on us everywhere we go. Especially those pesky politic experts, wow now there is some high intelligence. Gives a whole new meaning to the word stupid doesn’t it?

  • Stefan Bosch

The greatest myth is the “one size fits all”-approach.We’re all different in our needs. Be it nutrition or the amount or timing of sleep or whatever.

Now speak after me:”We are all individuals!”

  • Greg

BBC is taxpayer funded, I think it’s wrong for woods to use taxpayer funded services and call himself libertarian, at least when practically possible (there are no non-taxpayer funded roads).

  • Greg

Yes screw those experts who know how treat cancer or build a big bridge!!! How dare those experts tell us anything after all cows know more about milk than agricultural scientists or biologists!!! I hate experts sooo much, I NEVER listen to them!!!

  • Augie

I suspect perhaps  that the sleep and second sleep must have originated from night-watchman style scenarios. Ancient times with one group sleeping and one group holding back the dangers of the night. The article didn’t delve into the ‘why’ of it.

  • Augie

What was a Libertarian to do in Soviet Russia?

  • Greg

not use BBC because there are free market alternatives: fox news, cnn…

  • bill

Ahh, yes, the taxpayer funded vs. libertarian lifestyle argument.  I think it boils down to this: don’t throw too many stones.  We all use taypayer funded stuff.  We have to live in this world, and it is the ideas that matter.  We each “have to”  voluntarily contribute our part to a freer world.  If that means using BBC as a source, when warranted, so be it.  Tom Woods is a great guy.  Let’s be critical of things that really matter.  I don’t like tax funding any more than Murray Rothbard, but I also don’t want to lose my mind on every little detail.  Believe me, this is coming from someone who doesn’t really believe in the state at all.

P.S. I realize that sleep studies have little to do with freedom, for the purposes of my my little blurb here.  Sure, the funding of these studies is important (cui bono? for instance), but sometimes we are just interested in a subject and want to bounce it off other folks.

I usually go to sleep between 8 pm and 9 pm then sleep to about 1 or 2 am.  Then fall asleep after about an hour and wake between 4 and 5 am.  Seems natural enough to me.

  • jts

Tom, I have an off-topic for you, could you please bring some light into this article:

    http://www.moneytrendsresearch.com/bush-fed-europe-banks-in-15-trillion-fraud-all-documented/

And here is one video from the case being presented in the House of Lords:

  • Justicegene

Bravo!  One mans trash is another mans gold.  When it comes to sleep, you need an adequate amount.  But the amount and the style is different among people.

  • cwk

Greg, that argument is lame on so many levels it’s hard to decide where to begin. There are very few totally “free markets” as libertarians would like. Aside from “System D” every aspect of our culture is regulated,  taxed or politically manipulated and / or supported on some level, mostly in support of a parasitic government, including Fox News. From your logic, we would assume people should avoid anything associated with an institution that they have philosophical differences with.  Few people like war, but would they forgo the technologies that stemmed from it? Could you do without your cell phone? Jet aircraft?.  It is obvious there are better ways than war to advance technology, but that does mean we should ignore the technologies developed from it? Tom Woods is simply making profitable use of the existing resources in his environment. Not using them would not deter the BBC from creating them but using them can still advance his interests towards a free market. As the old maxim goes, no harm no foul.

  • Augie

What are you doing in here using a Libertarians resources?

  • cwk

Experts tell us how to eat and we are obese and diabetic. Experts tell us how to teach our children and we are among the most illiterate of the developed nations. Experts told us how to prepare for retirement and, following their advice, many never will. Forgive us for our doubt in “experts”

  • Dwight

I’ve been reading about the Uberman Sleep Schedule, myself.  Sounds rather interesting I think.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/William-Schooler/100003032488972 William Schooler

That would not be the experts that fabricate the cancer is it? Or the expert chemist making all the great drugs for our country right? Or how about that nuclear waste thats some good stuff. O ya and bridge builders have been around a really long time before they were educated by these idiots. But you just keep looking at what you want to look at and please o please don’t look at any of the rest because we see the results are so favorable. You wouldn’t be one of these educated experts would you?

Ignorance is generated in every university in this nation isn’t it?

  • BrunoT

So knowing how to sleep and knowing how to treat cancer or build  a bridge are equivalent, eh?

  • Greg

you are fat because you eat mcdonalds.  all doctors i have ever spoken to told me to not eat any proccessed food, stick mostly to fresh veg and fruit and fish and pultry.  i guess your experts are not as good as mine.

experts do not tell you how to teach your kids, teachers’ trade unions tell you how to teach them.  economists tell you to do other things but you never listen to us.

  • Greg

ok, if you are ever unfortunate enough to get really sick you should go to Woods or mises academy trained doctor, i will go to a university trained doctor and we will see what happens.

yeah i do not want my house built by these so called “engineers” with their fancy “engineering degrees” and their “expert knowledge” i would rather get Joe six pack to do it.  after all “Ignorance is generated in every university in this nation isn’t it?”

  • Greg

my point is that it is illogical to be so hostile towards “experts” as “William Schooler” is.  on average they will probably know better than me.

of course we ought to be skeptical towards medical science because actually it is in its infancy but never the less we ought to listen to it.  we do not have to agree with the conclutions but at least listen to them in a calm and sober manner.

in anycase experts on the whole have made my life much better!!!  when i got a really bad skin infection in my leg a few years ago i went to a doctor and he told me how to treat it.  of course i also went online to double check everything, but his treatment cleared the whole infection in a day.  same applies to many many other medical situations.  so if a medic tell me that may be sleeping in a different way is better i WILL listen and try it out.  may he is right, maybe not, may be his conclution will be proved wrong later.  but never the less i would at least listen to the expert!!

  • Greg

your criticism is wrong.  Woods provides this website free of charge and i use it.  libertarians like me see that not voluntary cooperation takes place through the market.

  • Greg

no, you are lame!  BBC is not free market institution (although it is by far superior as a media outlet to all other media outlets).

fox news and cnn are not 100% free market organisations but they are MUCH more so than BBC.  Woods has a clear and easy choice to make: not use BBC.  to be honest he should not be using it because only british taxpayers are technically entitled to do so but BBC does not block non-uk access.  in effect Woods is stealing from the british taxpayers.  while fox news is happy to provide their website for free the BBC charges the taxpayers and Woods is free riding on the taxpayer.  great

and don’t give me any of this “free markets don’t exist because we haven’t given them a chance” crap.  this is the exact same arguement communists use to show that communism can work.

  • http://www.TomWoods.com Tom Woods

Guys, I appreciate your defenses, but Greg is joking. No one in his right mind would make this kind of argument. He just likes to try to get a rise out of me.

  • http://twitter.com/MooseOfReason Jeff

We’ve been providing for their defense, which doesn’t come cheap.  We might as well get some of our money back, even if it is in the form of studies.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ken-MacMillan/683031628 Ken MacMillan

The pattern they’re talking about looks more like a nap at dusk, then up for an hour or two & back to bed. Realistically, who’s going to go to bed at dusk every night? Give it a shot & let me know how it works out.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/William-Schooler/100003032488972 William Schooler

Ya thats me mr. hostile, LOL. I mean hey we have expert lawyers, politicians, Financiers and especially those who know best in the FDA. Man, I am having difficulty trying to figure out expert versus fiction, Oh ya its probably just my thinking and screw what it is I have to observe everyday. You know us hostiles, LOL. That is just funny, I will make sure to put that in my portfolio so I can laugh at it when ever I look.

I think if I get sick I will order some good hemp oil, if nothing else it will relieve the pain and make me feel goofy until its all over because you wont convince me of their torture, I have personally watched it and it was not pretty. You go ahead and be my guest.

Since I have done a bit of building myself without a Degree, I am pretty sure we are capable, but some of these experts will certainly deny that idea wont you? LOL

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/William-Schooler/100003032488972 William Schooler

All this time, I was certain he was just some guy with butt itch, now I know he just loves playing with himself. If nothing else I got a good laugh from the expert.

  • http://www.facebook.com/tom.mullen1 Tom Mullen

I can’t believe that I found this on your blog today, Tom. I have been up since 3 AM after waking up and not being able to go back to sleep. LOL!

  • Augie

I didn’t hit a pay wall when I went to BBC. Are you British? You asking us to pay up some British taxes to view the BBC?

  • Augie

You will go to that doctor and fume at him about Woods. Buy that overpriced home and fume at Tom Woods in it. When you get the bill, fume at Tom Woods that he didn’t pay for it.

What is, is that you’re a statist who glorifies tax paid or otherwise subsidized “experts.”

What isn’t, is that you’ll do none of those things. Not on your own dime. You’ll pass it on to a future generation of “experts” to sort out the mess you advocate.

  • Rico

Haha I Just Post it on my fb. Although I sleep like 10hrs xD. But I know a Lot of people who can relate to this article!
