Journalist Plays Word Association Game with Me

Well, not quite. But Rob Nikolewski of New Mexico’s Capitol Report named some famous people and asked me to comment on each one, after a speech I gave in Albuquerque yesterday.

Tom, can you do a couple more associations…?
    Ayn Rand…?
    Milton Friedman…?
    and…
    Rand Paul…?
    and finally…
    Alex Jones…? :)

I love it! You know so much about these people just off of the top of your head. It’s too bad he didn’t say Bill O’Reilly. That would have been a funny one to hear.

    Nixon? Wow!
Although Ron Paul is the same age as my parents, I too got interested in government and economics thanks to President Nixon, particularly when he announced the wage and price controls, which astonished me, and I ended up doing a report on it for “current events” in grade school.
Later on, I became something of a Nixon junkie. I read lots of books about him, and finally came away with the impression that he was extremely smart, most likely a pretty nice guy up until some time in the 1960s, and probably not a progressive at heart, but merely wanting to beat his enemies at their own game. In fact, at some point, one of his White House people took a look at his desk after a particularly rough day he’d had on the phone with other government people. The President had scribbled on his desk calendar:
    “GOVERNMENT DOESN’T WORK!”
You see, he had a world of potential. ;) But for not living up to his potential, he certainly paid the price. This Nixon quote sums it up:

“Never be petty. Always remember, others may hate you. But those who hate you don’t win unless you hate them. And then you destroy yourself.”

One good description I’ve heard of Krugman in the last couple of months is “he’s an arsonist in a stadium full of straw men.”
