Murphy Debate Challenge to Krugman Surpasses $100,000

Many of you know about economist Bob Murphy’s challenge to Paul Krugman to debate. If you don’t — and heck, even if you do — visit KrugmanDebate.com. Pledges for this event are now at over $104,000. (Bob will update KrugmanDebate.com accordingly this weekend.) This means that if Krugman debates, and only if Krugman debates, a food bank in New York City will get this money. If Krugman never debates, no one who pledges will owe a dime.

Make sure you understand the specifics before saying, “Krugman will never do it.” Murphy has made it hard for Krugman to say no, given the money that would go to charity if it occurred. Of course, if you are absolutely convinced that Krugman will never debate, that’s all the more reason for you to pledge, and pledge a lot: if the debate never happens, your credit card never gets charged.

Unlearn the Propaganda!

You think if I pledge more than I own, FDIC would insure me in the event Krugman accepts?

Are you a major bank? Are you in the Obama administration? No, then tough luck Stephen.

I gotta say, The Murph is a brilliant guy, but he seems to have no pride! Or, more exactly, no vanity.

Ya gotta love him. If you’ve missed his Karaoke act, Google it. Priceless.

Might as well throw the farm in on this one ha! I hope that food bank isn’t holding its breath.

Has Krugman ever acknowledged the website/challenge?

  • Scr00ge

I’ve conditionally donated a dollar. Stakes are high.

  • Scr00ge

btw, would I be able to deduct that dollar on my tax form as charitable gift should the shindig go down?

  • http://twitter.com/StphnAdkns Stephen Adkins

He’s acknowledged the challenge, though the money to charity wasn’t explained. He pooh poohed wittiness competitions as inappropriate in the settling of economic policy questions, and he wasn’t going to dignify this sort of circus with any sort of response. In other words he knows he’d lose.

What does Krugman care about homeless kids? I don’t think he will ever do it, precisely because he doesn’t give a crap about them. They are not in his social circle.

Of course he doesn’t care. But it will be embarrassing for him if it looks like he doesn’t care.

There needs to be a cap on the funding because without a cap, Krugman will always have the excuse of saying, “Well, I want to debate him and I want money going to the food bank….but I feel the longer I wait, the more money there will be going to the food bank, so I’m not in any rush to do it”.
