My Anti-Capitalist Twitter Critic Is Back!

Some time ago I responded rather systematically and definitively to a fairly conventional Democrat (who think’s she’s voting for peace and justice, of course) who was attacking me repeatedly on Twitter. After I responded she sputtered a bit, answered none of my arguments, and went away.

Now she’s back, in the comments of this post. She says she hasn’t heard from me in a while. I’d say it’s the other way around: after I dismantled all her arguments, I haven’t heard from her.

She’s wondering how the election turned out for me, she says. So after all this, she is still caught in the Democrat/Republican charade and thinks I was supporting Romney.

I don’t waste my time with someone who so defiantly refuses to entertain an unconventional thought for once in her life. I responded to her because I thought my responses might be useful to other people who encounter similar arguments.

Here are my replies to her. I hope you enjoy them. And then the video version.

It’s very tiresome when the partisans get going, from both sides. They are arguing with something that doesn’t exist, but you can’t tell them — they just keep on going.

Great talk. Here is one of my favorite Hans-Hermann Hoppe talks on how the banks and government work together.

Too bad that Krugman doesn’t have the same enthusiasm for “debate” as Mahilena.

Speaking of Brad DeLong-Did you see his latest bemoaning that our “gilded” times have not produced a second Teddy Roosevelt/progressive reaction?

Has he not been listening to Obama’s class war rhetoric and insistence on raising tax rates on the rich even if it does not produce more revenue for the government or help pay down trhe debt?

I will say then that I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races, [applause]—that I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race.

Didn’t you say once “argue up, not down?” I get arguing against the general positions taken by the critic, because they are common amongst others, but why take time to hit this simpleton specifically? It’s not much of a fight. It doesn’t seem worth any effort. They are “informed” by certain ideas, and those seem to need the most attacking. This is just low hanging fruit.

When someone gets a thrashing and is completely unaware she got a thrashing, I make an exception to my rule. Childish, maybe, but I can’t help it.

Well, there is also the fact that her arguments were so elementarily false, they are very common amongst those on the left, and most of us are pretty familiar with the standard falsifications of those arguments, that it can be fun and entertaining to easily smack them down for a good laugh. Plus, since some of these ideas are so prevalent in today’s conventional wisdom, and the reasoned rebuttals certainly aren’t as common to most modes of popular media, it allows you to give the average Joe something to ponder. Unfortunately, many people that I know just repeat everything the TV told them, you essentially attacked that dynamic.

You can’t really pass up an opportunity like that, especially when they’re throwing it right into your lap (almost forcefully). You take it and run with it.

I would have done the same thing, and I actually *do* do the same thing, just on a smaller scale and with less intellectual rigor.

You’re dealing with an intellectual midget Tom. I mean if she doesn’t even realize she got her butt beat in this debate then that says something about this person’s lack of intelligence. Not every human is smart anyway.

A midget perhaps but not an atypical midget. That’s why I think there’s value in pointing it out. This might sound bad but ultimately I think that since these type of people don’t listen to reason and evidence at all, that the only thing that can combat them is basically public shaming. Not with insults but by showcasing how poor their arguments are as Tom has done. Eventually they may not feel confident in their views as much. They’ll never enthusiastically embrace freedom but maybe someday they’ll begrudgingly accept it if being a statist becomes a less respectable thing.

  • Jeremy

Maybe so. For some reason it takes some people for freaking ever to figure it out. And that’s even with all of this great info at our fingertips. I guess most people have to lose EVERYTHING to wake up. I’m afraid that’s what’s going to happen.

At least Krugman can pretend to be coherent.
