Potential Papal Candidates

This list of papal candidates seems reasonable. Far and away my two preferences would be Cardinal Albert Malcolm Ranjith of Sri Lanka, whom I have liked for a long time, and Cardinal Antonio Cañizares Llovera (and not just because he wrote the foreword to one of my books). Both would be good news liturgically, especially Cardinal Ranjith. Naturally, though, both are considered long shots.

Tom, thoughts on whether the traditionalists might push for an Italian?

the last pope (St. Malachy prophecy) will be Peter the Roman.

I’d be inclined for Card. Hummes because he confirmed me… :-) But, really, Card. Scherer would be another good choice from my home country, since it’s evident that I have an insufferable national bias. On the other hand, Card. Dolan or Pell would be interesting choices too.

Regardless, I’m confident that the Holy Spirit will continue blessing the Church with a solid vicar of Christ as He has for the last 150 years or so.

They should push for Ranjith. The Italians will give us John Paul III (business as usual, in other words).

Going outside the “usual suspects”, I’m fond of Cardinal Cipriani Thorne from Peru and Bishop Athanasius Schneider of Kazakhstan.

But I’m praying for whomever the Good Lord wills to lead His Church.

The prophecies of St. Malachy (a 12th century Irish bishop) have been pretty well rejected as 16th century forgeries.

Cardinal Raymond Burke would be another good choice for Traditionalists, although he is even more of a long shot.

and yet it’s being carried out because he was a (false) prophet.

Thanks once again for this valuable contribution.

the only problem is that the frontrunner for the next pope is a ckind of communist.

I”m Praying that the Cardinals Go Outside and Pick Cardinal Timothy Dolan and shock the World. He is what the Church Needs and He Will Guide Us With Strength.

Apparently the new pope is a Jesuit? I wonder what you think of him. I graduated from a Jesuit high school. I’m an atheist. I thought they were a pretty cool, enlightened bunch at the time, though a lot of the faculty (primarily lay faculty) were pretty socialist.
